Battle of Eagle Gate

The Battle of Eagle Gate was fought in 946.M41 on Eydolim, an Imperial shrine world of the Ultima Segmentum, between the Imperium and a coalition of Chaos forces gathered by the Word Bearers Daemon Prince Kor Megron. Eagle Gate was the name given to the outer walls of Eydol, the planet’s capital. Kor Megron’s warband, the Foresworn, had claimed Eydolim for the Emperor during the Great Crusade and raised its cathedrals before the Word Bearers turned to Chaos. Ten thousand years later he returned with allies from the Sons of Damnation, the Corpsemakers, the Night Lords, the Red Corsairs, the Iron Warriors and the World Eaters of Gladiator Group 138, supported by the Traitor Titan Legions Legio Excruciatus and Legio Interfector. After striking Jones Crispin World, the orbital mines of the gas giant Greater Eydolim and the world of Lector’s Lowell, the host descended on Eydolim, where the Cadian General Steinhold commanded the regiments of Crusade Group Black Gate and the planetary defence force. The invaders slaughtered thousands of defenders at their landing zones, took the promethium reserves at Hythe Ridge and advanced to within a day of Eydol. Marneus Calgar diverted the Ultramarines 2nd Company under Captain Cato Sicarius, with a small force of 1st Company Terminators, to Eydolim from fighting against the T’au. Deploying from the strike cruiser Valin’s Revenge to the walls of Eydol, the Ultramarines ambushed advance elements of the Legio Interfector, destroying one Reaver Titan and crippling two more. As Chaos Titans struck the Imperial left, daemons of Khorne the right and the Traitor Marines the centre of Eagle Gate, Sicarius held the Gate of Martyrs, the eastern entrance to the city. Kor Megron came against him in person and overpowered him in single combat, until a lone Guardsman attacked the daemon with a bayonet and was killed; in that moment Sicarius drove his blade through Kor Megron’s breastplate, and the Daemon Prince was dragged into the Warp. Leaderless, the Word Bearers fell back, followed by their allies, and Eydolim was held.
