Battle of Loki

The Battle of Loki, fought in 399.M41, was among the final engagements of the Macharian Crusade. It was waged on the world of Loki against the forces of Richter, once a protégé of Lord Solar Macharius, who had turned to the worship of Nurgle. The fighting became a war of attrition, marked by trench warfare, poison gas, Nurglite cultists, and germ shells, and Imperial supply efforts there failed repeatedly. Logan Grimnar, then a Space Wolf who had not yet risen to Wolf Lord, and the Inquisitor Hyronimus Drake led the final assault on Richter’s Niflgard Citadel. Accounts of Richter’s end differ: one holds that Drake and Grimnar slew him personally, finding him degenerated into a corpse-like thing; another holds that Imperial forces overran the citadel and killed him only after Macharius diverted an orbital strike onto the planet’s surface. The two accounts are not reconciled. The crusade’s morale faltered in the battle’s aftermath, a factor later cited in the decision not to advance into the Halo Zone.
