The Battle of Ravendelve is recorded as a Horus Heresy engagement fought in the mine-delves of Kiavahr, the Raven Guard’s home world. It is remembered as an Alpha Legion incursion timed to catch Corvus Corax’s Legion while it was at its weakest, in the aftermath of the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, when the Raven Guard had lost the bulk of its strength and was drawing fresh recruits from Kiavahr’s labouring population to rebuild its ranks. Alpha Legion doctrine favoured exactly such a moment: infiltration and disruption aimed at a wounded enemy rather than open confrontation, and Ravendelve’s deep workings offered cover for agents seeking to isolate Corax from his gathering forces before they could be trained and armed. Accounts describe the fighting as confined largely to the delve’s tunnels and pit-galleries rather than open ground, a setting that favoured neither side outright, since both Legions were practised in ambush, misdirection, and small-unit action. Raven Guard veterans, already inclined toward the hit-and-run tactics that would come to define their post-Heresy doctrine, used their knowledge of the workings against an enemy whose own methods relied on the same advantages of concealment and surprise. The engagement is described as costly and inconclusive in the conventional sense, with neither Legion achieving a decisive rout, though the Alpha Legion force was eventually driven from the delve without severing Corax from his rebuilding Chapter. Ravendelve is held in later tradition to have hardened the Raven Guard’s reliance on stealth, subterfuge, and dispersed small-scale warfare in the years that followed, a doctrine that shaped the Legion’s conduct for the remainder of the Heresy and beyond.
