The Blood Pact Founding Myth recounts how Urlock Gaur forged the Blood Pact, an elite Archenemy corps of the Sabbat Worlds theatre, through a blood oath. Tradition holds that Gaur, in his rise to mastery of the sector’s Chaos forces, drew the most zealous of his followers into a standing corps loyal to himself alone, rather than to any single warband or Ruinous Power. This distinction set the Blood Pact apart from the looser levies raised world by world across the Sabbat Worlds theatre: where such levies dissolved or scattered with a given campaign, the Blood Pact is described as a permanent, self-renewing institution, its ranks replenished by conquest and by the induction of captured or converted populations rather than by any single world’s manpower. Central to the founding myth is the rite of scarification undergone by every initiate, an act said to bind soldier to warlord more absolutely than an ordinary oath of service. Accounts agree that the marking is understood by the Blood Pact itself to make surrender or desertion unthinkable, a psychological as much as a ritual commitment that Imperial analysts cite as the source of the corps’ notorious cohesion under fire. Because the rite and its origin are known chiefly through captured testimony and soldierly rumour rather than confirmed record, the founding remains, in the main, a matter of legend even within the Archenemy’s own ranks. Within Gaur’s wider following, the sorcerer-lord Anakwanar Sek rose as a rival power whose ambitions are said to have unsettled the loyalty the Blood Pact otherwise held as inviolable to Gaur alone; accounts of the exact relationship between the two leaders vary and are not treated as settled fact even by Imperial intelligence. Imperial accounts most closely associate the Blood Pact’s operations with the long campaigns of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First-and-Only, whose repeated clashes with the corps across the crusade’s middle years are among the best-documented instances of the Blood Pact in action.
