Blood Pact founding myth
The Blood Pact is an elite corps of human warriors of the Archenemy, bound by a ritual blood oath to the warlord Urlock Gaur. Its origins are recounted more as martial legend than verified history, but tradition holds that Gaur forged the corps from among the most zealous of his followers during his rise to power, welding them into a standing force loyal to him alone rather than to any single Chaos power or warband. Unlike looser Archenemy levies raised world by world across the Sabbat Worlds theatre, the Blood Pact is described as a permanent, self‑renewing institution, its ranks replenished by conquest and by the induction of captured or converted populations. Central to the founding myth is the rite of scarification by which initiates are marked, an act said to bind soldier to warlord more absolutely than ordinary oaths of service, reputedly making surrender or desertion unthinkable to those who undergo it. Anakwanar Sek, a sorcerer‑lord who rose within Gaur’s forces, features in the wider lore of the corps as a rival power whose ambitions were said to unsettle the loyalty the Blood Pact otherwise held as inviolable, though accounts of the relationship between the two leaders vary and are not treated as settled fact even within Imperial intelligence. Within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, the Blood Pact came to stand as the most feared and consistently encountered instrument of Gaur’s war effort, its fanatical cohesion cited by Imperial commanders as a mark of the wider threat the Archenemy posed across the sector. Its founding remains, in the main, a matter of soldierly rumour and captured testimony rather than confirmed record, and this very uncertainty has itself become part of the corps’ fearsome reputation.
