Compliance of Caldera

The Compliance of Caldera was a Great Crusade campaign in which Vulkan, Ferrus Manus and Mortarion brought the world One-Five-Four Four into the Imperium. Vulkan led the Salamanders, Ferrus Manus the Iron Hands and Mortarion the Death Guard. Known to the Eldar as Caldera, the world was a rare example of coexistence between humans and Eldar: its human tribes descended from people of Nocturne who had been freed from Dark Eldar captivity by their craftworld kin, and they lived alongside Exodite Eldar, who had settled the world outside the craftworlds. The Imperial forces fought Eldar who had psychically enslaved a race of chitin-armoured insect warriors. While the Iron Hands and the Death Guard engaged the xenos, the Salamanders advanced through the deepest jungles. The campaign is recorded as an Eldar device to lure Ferrus Manus into a psychic labyrinth in which he would learn of the coming Horus Heresy; when that attempt failed, the Eldar abandoned the world. Vulkan, guided by a remembrancer later revealed as a psychic projection of the Emperor, fought his way to a webway portal and then came upon human tribes preparing to sacrifice a Dark Eldar captive to ward off further raids. Judging that the humans would never accept the Imperium in place of their Eldar liberators, Vulkan ordered the world cleansed by fire to erase all trace of coexistence between humans and xenos. Troubled by what he had done, he vowed that Caldera would never again suffer such destruction, a vow he later invoked when he returned to defend the world during the War of the Beast.
