Destruction of Barbarus

The Destruction of Barbarus was the Passage of the Angels assault in which Lion El’Jonson’s Dark Angels destroyed the Death Guard homeworld during the later Horus Heresy. Dated within the wider crusade of about 012–013.M31, the attack formed part of the Lion’s campaign to burn Traitor holdings in the southern Imperium after the Ruinstorm’s breach, both to punish the rebels and to deny Horus the industry and mustering grounds of a “second front” against Terra. Barbarus, a poisoned mountain world on which Mortarion had been raised under alien Overlords, remained a symbolic and material seat of the XIV Legion’s strength. The Lion committed Dark Angels forces, including Old Night weaponry drawn from the First Legion’s vaults, to a systematic annihilation rather than a prolonged reconquest. Contemporary framing of the Passage held that a world fallen to the enemy was not worth reclaiming if breaking it could break the foe’s capacity to sustain the war. The destruction of Barbarus, together with that of Chemos and of other Traitor-aligned worlds on the Lion’s path, stripped resources Horus needed for a long siege of Terra and helped force the Warmaster to hasten his thrust on the Sol System. Leman Russ later joined the Crusade of Vengeance; the Lion himself turned for Terra only after the Astronomican’s failure and a gathering at Deliverance, arriving too late to alter the Siege’s final hours.
