Discovery of Magnus on Prospero
The discovery of Magnus the Red on Prospero was the reunion of the Emperor of Mankind with the primarch of the XV Legion, dated by Magnus himself to 840.M30. As an infant Magnus’s gestation capsule had fallen onto Prospero, a remote colony of human psykers who had settled far from Terra; the pod struck the central plaza, and the child was raised among the planet’s scholars under the mentor Amon. He surpassed the commune’s adepts, looked into the Warp rather than merely drawing power from it, and led a campaign that purged the Psychneuein which had preyed on Prospero for centuries, after which he rebuilt many of its cities, most notably Tizca. When the Emperor’s fleet reached Prospero, father and son embraced and spoke as if already long acquainted, for they had communed telepathically before meeting in the flesh. Accounts differ on how far that date of 840.M30 marks first psychic contact rather than the physical landing of the Imperial fleet; other records place the Thousand Sons’ active participation in the Great Crusade no earlier than about 900.M30. Magnus took the mutated XV Legion as his own, trained its warriors as psykers, and for a time arrested the flesh-change among them at the cost of his right eye in a bargain later attributed to the daemon Choronzon. The discovery seated Prospero as Magnus’s homeworld and bound the Thousand Sons to his command for the remainder of the Great Crusade. It stands at the head of the sequence that runs from Prospero’s libraries through Nikaea, the Burning of Prospero, and the Legion’s later exile on Sortiarius.
