Escovan Campaign

The Escovan Campaign was a series of battles fought in 989.M41, during which the Red Corsairs swore to slay the fugitive Cypher. The Red Corsairs are a renegade warband, and despite the campaign’s name, no world, sector or segmentum is identified as the setting of the fighting, so nothing in the surviving record permits it to be placed on any map of the galaxy. The origins of the campaign are not set out in detail. What survives is the oath itself: in the course of the fighting, the Red Corsairs bound themselves to hunting down and killing Cypher, adding this episode to a long and scattered history of attempts on his existence. Why the warband and the fugitive came into conflict at this particular time is not stated, and no cause beyond the vow itself is recorded. The engagements of the Escovan Campaign are described only as several bloody battles, fought across an unspecified span within 989.M41. No commander, fleet or force strength is named on either side, and no single engagement is singled out as decisive. The campaign is remembered chiefly for the vow it produced rather than for any recorded victory or defeat.
