Fall of Kanak
The Fall of Kanak denotes the lengthy and bitter war waged across the volcanic forge-world of Kanak in the final decades of the 41st Millennium, when a Word Bearers warband under the Dark Apostle Oriax descended upon the planet to seize its subterranean reliquary-vaults, said to house relics looted from the Imperium during the Great Crusade’s darkest hours. Oriax, a fanatic of the Dark Gods’ Undivided aspect, had spent a generation tracing rumour and heretical scripture to Kanak’s magma-wreathed crust, and his assault fell upon the world’s Mechanicus garrison with a suddenness that left half its hive-forges burning before the first distress signal reached the wider sector. The Imperium’s response drew upon several Astartes Chapters, but it was the Space Wolves who bore the heaviest share of the fighting, landing in company strength across Kanak’s ash-choked equatorial belt to contest the Word Bearers’ advance mountain by mountain. Oriax proved a cunning adversary, binding daemonic hosts to the planet’s volcanic vents and turning Kanak’s own geology into a weapon, so that entire Space Wolves packs were lost to eruptions timed with uncanny precision to coincide with Imperial advances. Among the Chapter’s forces recorded on Kanak’s muster rolls were the Blackmanes, the Great Company led by Wolf Lord Ragnar, whose packs were thrown into the contested Cinderspire district during the war’s third year. Ragnar’s Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard fought a running battle through the spire’s lower levels for eleven days, denying Oriax’s chosen a direct path to the deepest reliquary chamber and buying the Imperial Fists contingent then fighting alongside them the time needed to seal the vault beneath collapsing rock. Kanak was never wholly cleansed; Oriax himself escaped the world’s fall in the war’s final hours, vanishing into the warp with a fraction of his followers, and Imperial authorities subsequently classified the forge-world Perdita Interdicta pending a second expedition that, as of the early 42nd Millennium, had not been mounted. The Fall of Kanak is remembered within the Chapter chiefly for the discipline the Blackmanes showed under siege conditions that broke several Fenrisian traditions of open engagement, and for the heavy losses taken among Ragnar’s Blood Claws, several of whose names were added to the Wolf Lord’s own saga in the campaign’s aftermath.
