Guns of Tanith campaign
The Guns of Tanith campaign was an Imperial Guard aerial assault to liberate Phantine during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade of the late 41st millennium. It is chronicled in Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts novel of the same name, in which the operation is led by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First-and-Only regiment. The wider crusade, prosecuted by Warmaster Macaroth against the Archenemy forces of the Anarch Urlock Gaur, also encompassed the shrine world of Hagia, within whose theatre the campaign is set. Phantine was a hive-and-refinery world shrouded beneath a toxic cloud layer, rendering conventional ground assault impractical. Imperial forces instead relied on aerial insertion, with Tanith troopers trained alongside the Phantine Air Corps to descend on grav-driven skyboards through the poisonous mists and seize key aerial approaches and manufactory installations. The campaign combined this airborne tactic with sustained fighting against entrenched Archenemy defenders holding the world’s cloud-top settlements. The Guns of Tanith campaign forms part of the broader chronicle of the Tanith First-and-Only within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, following earlier engagements recounted in Necropolis and Honour Guard. Its resolution allowed crusade forces to consolidate their position and press onward toward further Sabbat Worlds objectives, including operations in the vicinity of Hagia. The episode is remembered chiefly through its literary account rather than through wider Imperial historical record.
