Hagia shrine war
The Hagia shrine war was a large-scale conflict fought in the 41st millennium on Hagia, a shrine world sacred to the cult of Saint Sabbat. The world’s Shrinehold housed relics of the martyred saint, whose veneration extended across the Sabbat Worlds and underpinned the morale of the wider crusade bearing her name. Hagia’s status as a site of pilgrimage made it both a spiritual rallying point for the Imperium and a target for those who sought to strike at that devotion. The war arose when hostile forces moved against the shrine world, threatening the sanctity of the relics and the pilgrims and clergy gathered there. Imperial Guard units, among them the Tanith First-and-Only, were committed to the defence alongside an honour guard charged specifically with the relics’ protection, and fighting spread through the shrine precincts and surrounding terrain as attackers pressed to overrun the holy site. The defence was marked by heavy losses on both sides as the battle for control of the Shrinehold intensified. The conflict ended with the shrine world held and the saint’s relics kept from seizure or destruction, preserving Hagia’s role as a centre of faith within the Sabbat Worlds. The episode became closely associated with the Tanith First-and-Only’s service record and with the broader defence of Saint Sabbat’s legacy during the crusade fought in her name.
