Loken’s mission to Caliban

Loken’s mission to Caliban was a covert undertaking early in the Horus Heresy in which the Knight-Errant Garviel Loken, sent by Malcador the Sigillite, went to Caliban to judge the strength and loyalty of the Dark Angels garrison under Luther and, if possible, the whereabouts and allegiance of Lion El’Jonson. He travelled with Iacton Qruze, a former comrade. No narrower year is recorded. Loken allowed himself to be captured and was questioned by Luther in the fortress of Aldurukh, giving his name only as Cerberus; Luther identified him as a former Luna Wolf from his Cthonian accent. With telepathic help from one of the Watchers in the Dark, Loken judged that Luther did not yet know of the Heresy but was ambitious and resentful of the Lion. A Watcher released him from his cell, while Qruze slipped into the fortress and was confronted by Cypher, who knew him by name. When a Dark Angel guard caught Loken, Qruze shot and killed him, an act Loken feared might tip the garrison against the Imperium. Cypher, whom Loken recognised from their shared past, led the two Knights-Errant out of the dungeons but declined to join Malcador’s agents, saying that those who serve in the shadows are not remembered. The mission left the allegiance of the Lion unresolved.
