Macharian Heresy
The Macharian Heresy was a civil war that convulsed the newly won territories of the Macharian Crusade following the death of Lord Solar Macharius. Macharius had driven the Imperium’s eastward expansion across the Segmentum Pacificus, subjugating over a thousand worlds in a campaign of extraordinary speed and ambition. His sudden death, which later tradition attributes variously to poison, illness, or the strain of endless war, left the crusade’s sprawling conquests without an agreed successor, and the loyalty that had bound his officers and regiments to one another began to fracture. In the vacuum that followed, elements of the crusade’s own military establishment turned against the authority Terra sought to impose over the captured domain. Generals, regiments, and newly subjugated worlds that had followed Macharius personally proved unwilling to accept administrators and commanders who had not shared in his campaigns, and open rebellion spread across sectors still barely pacified from their original conquest. Accounts differ on how far the fighting extended and how many worlds took part, but the unrest is recorded as lasting years, compounding the difficulty of holding together a realm won faster than it could be secured. Imperial forces eventually suppressed the revolt, though the fighting left much of the Macharian Crusade’s eastern gains weakened, and some worlds are held to have slipped into isolation, xenos predation, or Chaos taint before order was restored or the territory abandoned as untenable. The Heresy is remembered, alongside the related unrest known as the Macharian Schism, as part of the troubled legacy that followed Macharius’s death: a reminder that his conquests, however vast, were bound together more by his own presence than by settled Imperial governance. Within the Orrery graph, the Macharian Heresy sits downstream of the Macharian Crusade and Lord Solar Macharius, anchored to the Segmentum Pacificus and the wider instability of the eastern fringe in the early 41st Millennium. It is best read alongside the crusade itself and its principal commander, whose death set the conflict in motion.
