Martyrdom of Saint Sabbat

The Martyrdom of Saint Sabbat marks the death of the warrior-prophet Sabbat Beati on Harkalon, at the close of her crusade in the 35th millennium. Born around the year 500.M35 to a shepherd family on the pastoral world of Hagia, in the region of the Segmentum Pacificus later renamed the Sabbat Worlds in her honour, she rose from obscurity to lead a decades-long campaign against Chaos-aligned warlords and hostile xenos across a frontier only loosely held by the Imperium. Sabbat’s ministry began with a vision of the Emperor that she took as a summons to unify the scattered, often embattled human populations of the region and turn back the Ruinous Powers. Her preaching drew both fervent devotion, gathering a following that spread well beyond her home world, and violent opposition from the warlords and cults whose rule she threatened. It was this sustained opposition, resisted across the length of her campaign, that ultimately produced the circumstances of her death. The crusade she led endured for some 105 Terran years, drawing to her side commanders such as Lord Kiodrus, later himself beatified by the Imperial Cult, and the strategist Faltornus, alongside warriors of the White Scars and Brazen Skulls Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, a precursor order of the Sisters Militant that would prefigure the Adepta Sororitas, and colonial planetary defence and Astra Militarum regiments. She was slain on Harkalon, her body marked by what later tradition calls the Nine Holy Wounds; the precise circumstances of the killing are not established with certainty, the surviving record having passed through generations of Ecclesiarchy retelling before reaching its canonised form. Her remains were recovered by the White Scars and interred in the Shrinehold, a great tomb raised on her home world of Hagia.
