Menazoid Epsilon operation
The Menazoid Epsilon operation was a Sabbat Worlds Crusade engagement fought on the world of Menazoid Epsilon during the 41st millennium. It formed the opening campaign undertaken by the Tanith First-and-Only, an Astra Militarum regiment newly raised in the wake of their homeworld’s destruction, and stands as their first recorded action in Imperial service. Command of the operation fell to Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, who led elements of the regiment against Chaos-held positions on Menazoid Epsilon as part of the wider Crusade effort to roll back enemy holdings across the Sabbat Worlds. The engagement tested the cohesion of the recently formed unit, whose ranks combined survivors of Tanith with troops drawn from other disbanded formations, and exposed early frictions of command and loyalty within its officer corps. The operation is chiefly known through its depiction in Dan Abnett’s novel First and Only, the first published entry in the Gaunt’s Ghosts series, where it serves as the prelude to the regiment’s subsequent involvement in the larger Crusade battle for Balhaut. As such, Menazoid Epsilon is remembered less for its strategic weight within the Crusade than for its role in establishing the Tanith First-and-Only as a fighting force.
