Ibram Gaunt

Colonel-Commissar, Lord Militant, First Lord Executor

Also known as Colonel-Commissar Gaunt

Homeworld: Tanith

Ibram Gaunt is Colonel-Commissar of the Tanith First and Only, the regiment known in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade as Gaunt’s Ghosts. He holds the merged rank of colonel and commissar, a command structure unique to his regiment, and answers in turn to the successive Warmasters of the crusade to reclaim the Sabbat Worlds sub-sector from the forces of Chaos.

After the Imperial victory at Balhaut in 765.M41, the dying Warmaster Slaydo promoted Gaunt to Colonel-Commissar and charged him with raising Tanith’s three regiments. Before the newly formed companies could be deployed, Tanith itself was destroyed during the evacuation, and only the force already embarked under Gaunt survived, a single reconnaissance and line regiment carrying the world’s name forward. Gaunt’s own formation as an officer is recorded as beginning under an earlier mentor commissar, whose death left him to develop the doctrine of leading from the front rather than enforcing discipline from the rear.

Across the Sabbat Worlds theatres, Gaunt’s command rests on a small set of enduring relationships: Major Colm Corbec as his second-in-command and closest confidant, the officer Elim Rawne whose early hostility toward Gaunt gave way to grudging loyalty, and Commissar Viktor Hark, who absorbed and continued Gaunt’s style of commissarial practice within the regiment. The Ghosts’ path repeatedly crosses that of the visionary figure known as the Beati, or Saint Sabbat, an association carried in part through the trooper Brin Milo. Gaunt’s standing has also depended on the patronage of Lord General Barthol Van Voytz, who shielded him from political consequences more than once, set against recurring friction with Inquisitorial oversight, including scrutiny from the Inquisitor Heldane.

The death of Slaydo and the succession of Macaroth as Warmaster placed Gaunt in an uneasy relationship with the new crusade command, whose strategic priorities did not always align with his own. Gaunt’s subsequent elevation to Lord Militant, and later to First Lord Executor, reflects a trusted senior role within Macaroth’s crusade command structure, held alongside his continuing direct command of the Ghosts. He remains active within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade in the current era.

Tanith survives only as the regiment’s name, dialect, and nightfighting tradition, carried by the veterans Gaunt still commands. In this sense his career is bound to a world that no longer exists, with the First and Only standing as its last inhabited territory.
