Mournival counsel
The Mournival was a four-officer counsel convened by Warmaster Horus aboard his flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, to advise him informally during the Horus Heresy. Its name recalled an old custom of the Luna Wolves Legion, in which four warriors stood at a commander’s side to temper counsel with camaraderie, and Horus revived the practice shortly after his elevation to Warmaster. Membership was drawn from among the Legion’s most trusted captains, who held no formal rank within the council beyond the Warmaster’s personal confidence. Through much of the Heresy’s opening phase, the Mournival’s founding members included Ezekyle Abaddon, Horus Aximand, Tarik Torgaddon and Garviel Loken, each chosen for qualities Horus valued in counsel and companionship rather than seniority of command. The body met privately to discuss matters of strategy, loyalty and morale, and its deliberations grew fraught as the Warmaster’s allegiance shifted following his wounding on the world of Davin. Loken’s disquiet at the Legion’s changing character strained his standing within the counsel, and his death during the massacre at Isstvan III marked a turning point that foreshadowed the wider schism engulfing the Sons of Horus. As the Heresy progressed and the Luna Wolves were renamed the Sons of Horus, the Mournival’s character altered to reflect the Warmaster’s consolidating grip upon his officers, its deliberations increasingly shaped by unquestioning loyalty rather than open debate. The counsel’s later history remains obscured within the fragmentary record of the Vengeful Spirit’s command, though its early sessions are remembered as a crucible in which the loyalties that shaped the opening years of the Heresy were tested and, for several of its members, ultimately broken.
