Vengeful Spirit

The Vengeful Spirit is a Gloriana-class battle-barge that served as the flagship of Warmaster Horus during the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy. Vessels of this class rank among the largest and most heavily armed warships fielded by the Space Marine Legions, and the Vengeful Spirit carried the Sixteenth Legion — known successively as the Luna Wolves and, after Horus’s elevation to Warmaster, the Sons of Horus — across the length of the Great Crusade before becoming the command centre of his rebellion against the Imperium.

The ship attained particular notoriety for events said to have occurred within its chambers following the Warmaster’s near-fatal wounding on the world of Davin by a corrupted blade wielded by the Serpent Lodge’s interlocutor. It was aboard the Vengeful Spirit that Horus is held to have been restored to health through the intervention of the Chaos Gods, with the Word Bearers chaplain Erebus recorded as instrumental in engineering the visit to Davin; the episode is regarded as the moment of the Warmaster’s final corruption and the true beginning of the Heresy that bears his name.

The vessel subsequently functioned as Horus’s command ship during the opening atrocities of the rebellion, including the false betrayal at Istvaan III — witnessed at close hand by Luna Wolves officers such as Garviel Loken and Ezekyle Abaddon before the loyalist purge — and the Dropsite Massacre at Istvaan V, after which it led the traitor armada on its long advance towards Terra. During the Siege of Terra, the Vengeful Spirit served as Horus’s principal command vessel in high orbit above the Throneworld, and its bridge is traditionally identified as the site of the climactic single combat between the Warmaster and the Emperor of Mankind.

The ship’s fate immediately after Horus’s defeat is not consistently recorded across all accounts, but later tradition holds that it drifted derelict for millennia before being recovered and reconsecrated by Ezekyle Abaddon, by then Warmaster of Chaos and lord of the Black Legion. In this later role the Vengeful Spirit is held as Abaddon’s own flagship, carrying him through successive Black Crusades against the Imperium into the present era, and it remains among the most storied vessels associated with both the Horus Heresy and the ongoing wars of the 41st and 42nd millennia.
