Pacification of Teghar Pentaurus

The Pacification of Teghar Pentaurus was Sanguinius’s first campaign at the head of the IX Legion, fought on the Imperial world of that name during the Great Crusade soon after he assumed command. He had spent three years with Horus Lupercal and the Luna Wolves learning Imperial ways before he was brought to meet the Legion then known as the Revenant Legion—savage, scattered, and feared for its appetite for flesh and blood. Before the assembled warriors he learned each name in turn and swore an oath to his sons rather than demanding theirs, declaring that the Legion would no longer be broken and that they alone would conduct the coming war without Luna Wolves support. The speech bound the IX to him. In the fighting against the abhuman hordes of Teghar he gave his own blood in the melee and took as his first recorded kill a ferocious carnodon whose pelt was fashioned into a ceremonial war-cloak. There he also witnessed the bloodlust and hunger for flesh that his sons carried, a foreshadowing of the Flaw that later accounts bind to the Red Thirst. The pacification stands as the moment the Great Angel and the IX Legion first made war together, and as the origin of the bond later traditions treat as the Legion’s remaking under his humility rather than his wrath.
