Phantine air war
The Phantine air war was a campaign of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, fought in the toxic upper atmosphere of the hive world Phantine. Imperial forces, spearheaded by the Tanith First-and-Only regiment under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, combined with the Phantine Air Corps to dislodge Archenemy forces occupying the world’s sky mills, the aerial refineries on which Phantine’s population and industry depended. Because Phantine’s surface was rendered uninhabitable by volcanic activity and a poisonous atmosphere, its inhabitants lived and worked upon towering sky mills suspended above the cloud line, reachable only by air. To retake mills seized by the enemy, Ghosts troopers carried out high-altitude combat drops directly onto the platforms, while Phantine Air Corps aircrews flying Marauder bombers and Thunderbolt fighters provided air cover and suppressed the anti-aircraft defences ranged against the assault. The fighting tested improvised cooperation between an infantry regiment unaccustomed to aerial insertion and an air corps unfamiliar with supporting airborne troops, and it numbered among the costlier engagements fought by the Tanith First-and-Only during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Phantine’s recapture secured the sky mills for the Imperium and preserved a source of matériel for the wider crusade against the forces of Chaos.
