Remembrancer Order deployment
The Remembrancer Order deployment placed Imperial remembrancers aboard the flagship Vengeful Spirit to chronicle the Great Crusade in prose, art, and record. Established by Imperial decree, the Remembrancer Order attached civilian artists, poets, iterators, and historians to expeditionary fleets so that the Emperor’s unification of humanity might be preserved for posterity. A contingent was assigned to the 63rd Expedition under the Warmaster Horus, taking up residence aboard the Vengeful Spirit as the fleet campaigned through the galaxy’s western reaches. Their presence was received with ambivalence by the fleet’s Astartes and officers, who regarded the remembrancers’ scrutiny as a distraction from military discipline, even as some officers, including the Warmaster himself, extended them patronage. The deployment ended in catastrophe once Horus turned to treachery. As the Warmaster’s forces moved against the Emperor’s loyal servants, the remembrancers embedded within the fleet were deemed a liability to secrecy and were largely killed or dispersed in the purges that followed, their chronicling mission abandoned mid-course. The scattered survivors and salvaged testimonies that emerged from the fleet became fragmentary witnesses to the opening atrocities of the Horus Heresy, though the Order itself did not survive as an organised body.
