Rise of Warmaster Macaroth
The Rise of Warmaster Macaroth marks Macaroth’s succession to supreme command of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade after Slaydo’s death. Warmaster Slaydo, having secured a decisive victory at the Battle of Balhaut, succumbed shortly afterwards to illness, leaving the crusade without its architect at a critical juncture. Before his death he nominated Lord Militant General Macaroth as his heir, a choice ratified by the High Lords of Terra over the objections of rival claimants to the warmaster’s baton. The transition unsettled the crusade’s command structure. Officers who had risen under Slaydo’s patronage, among them Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt of the Tanith First-and-Only, found their standing with the new warmaster uncertain, while rivals such as Lord General Dravere, who had coveted the office himself, pressed their own interests within the reorganised high command. Under Macaroth’s direction the crusade’s campaigns continued deeper into the Sabbat Worlds, sustaining the offensive Slaydo had begun while reshaping its strategic priorities and command appointments. The succession thus stands as a formative episode in the crusade’s protracted prosecution, its effects felt in the fortunes of individual commanders and formations for years afterward.
