Sek versus Gaur rivalry
The rivalry between the Chaos commanders Anakwanar Sek and Urlock Gaur divided the enemy war effort during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Sek served for years as a subordinate commander under Gaur, the self-proclaimed Archon whose forces contested the sector against the Imperial crusade. Their relationship combined military cooperation with mounting personal ambition, as Sek, a commander of considerable tactical skill, grew increasingly resentful of Gaur’s overall authority and privately critical of his judgement. The breach between the two came to a head after Gaur suffered a severe defeat and disappeared from the field, leaving the fate of his command uncertain. Sek seized the opportunity to declare himself the new Anarch, rallying loyal formations, among them his own Sons of Sek, and turning against factions that remained faithful to Gaur or awaited his return. The resulting schism fractured what had been a broadly unified Chaos war effort into competing power blocs, each claiming legitimate succession to Gaur’s authority. For the Imperial forces of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, the schism between Sek and Gaur offered both opportunity and fresh danger: disunity among Chaos commanders was offset by the emergence of Sek as a shrewder and more dangerous adversary in his own right. The rivalry endured as one of the defining internal conflicts shaping the later course of the crusade, its outcome remaining bound to the wider struggle for control of the Sabbat Worlds.
