Thunderfist’s Bane

Thunderfist’s Bane refers to the battle fought in 983.M41 on the ash-world of Bhakhar, in which the Space Wolves Wolf Lord Berek Thunderfist was slain by the Chaos champion Ghorox during a campaign to drive Chaos raiders from the planet’s equatorial settlements. Thunderfist had led his Great Company to Bhakhar in pursuit of a warband that had been raiding Imperial shipping lanes along the sector’s edge for close to a decade, cornering Ghorox’s forces at the fortified basin surrounding the world’s principal hive only to find the champion a far more formidable duellist than Imperial intelligence had suggested. Ragnar fought at Bhakhar as part of the wider Space Wolves deployment, and it was his own loss of control in the battle’s climactic hours — a berserk battle-rage that carried him and his pack deep into the enemy line ahead of the rest of the Imperial formation — that Chapter accounts cite as the proximate cause of the disaster that followed. Separated from Thunderfist’s command by Ragnar’s unsanctioned charge, the Wolf Lord’s bodyguard was thinned at precisely the moment Ghorox chose to commit his own reserve, and Thunderfist found himself facing the champion with insufficient support to prevent what followed. Ghorox killed Berek Thunderfist in single combat before the Wolf Lord’s own Wolf Guard could fight their way back to him, and the champion withdrew from Bhakhar with his warband largely intact, judging the Space Wolves too disorganised in the aftermath to pursue effectively. The battle ended as a tactical defeat dressed as a strategic one: Bhakhar’s raiders were indeed broken as an organised threat to the sector, but the death of one of the Chapter’s most respected Wolf Lords overshadowed any such accounting, and blame for the collapse of the command line fell, fairly or not, upon Ragnar’s battle-rage. Thunderfist’s Bane is remembered within the Chapter as both a defeat and a turning point, the battle that left Ragnar carrying a debt of honour he would not consider repaid until Ghorox himself was found and killed. Several of Thunderfist’s surviving Wolf Guard refused for years afterward to fight alongside Ragnar, a rift within the Chapter that was not fully healed until the champion’s death at the Templum Incarnadus settled, in the Fenrisian reckoning, the question of whose failure the Bhakhar disaster had truly been.
