Urdesh campaign
The Urdesh campaign was a protracted Imperial Guard struggle to secure the forge world of Urdesh from the forces of Anarch Sek. Waged as a pivotal theatre of the wider Sabbat Worlds Crusade under Warmaster Macaroth, it pitted Astra Militarum regiments and Adeptus Mechanicus forces against an entrenched Archenemy occupation. Urdesh’s standing as a major manufactory world, capable of supplying war matériel to either side, made its recapture a strategic priority for the Crusade. Fighting centred on Urdesh’s capital, Eltath, and the surrounding manufactory districts, where Imperial forces confronted heavily fortified enemy positions amid ruined forgeworks and shrine-factories. Among the units engaged was the Tanith First-and-Only, the penal-founded regiment led by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, whose actions during the campaign feature prominently in its chronicling. The struggle proved protracted and costly, characterised by close urban fighting and shifting lines of control across the ruined city. The campaign is principally recorded in Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts series, notably the novels The Warmaster and Anarch, which narrate the Crusade forces’ efforts against Sek’s occupation. Its outcome marked a significant, if costly, advance for Macaroth’s Crusade against the Anarch’s forces, with Urdesh’s partial recovery shaping the campaigns that followed. The events at Urdesh remain a notable episode in the broader history of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.
