World Engine
The World Engine is an ancient, colossal construct associated with the world of Borsis, whose origin and purpose remain disputed among Imperial investigators. Adeptus Mechanicus and Ordo Xenos assessments differ as to whether it should be classed as a weapon, a world-shaping device, or something for which Imperial terminology has no ready equivalent, but all concur that its scale exceeds any single fortress-world installation, and that its activation has, on at least one recorded occasion, threatened devastation across Borsis and the systems nearby. The entity is bound most closely, in the Orrery timeline, to the Astral Knights, a Space Marine Chapter recorded as having made a defining sacrifice in direct connection with the World Engine. Later tradition within the Chapter holds that the Astral Knights committed themselves, near to the point of annihilation, to halting or containing the construct at Borsis, an action still marked among the Chapter’s honours, though the full particulars of command, date, and outcome are not uniformly preserved across surviving sources. What is consistently attested is the scale of the cost: a Chapter reduced to a fraction of its strength in an engagement whose stakes were judged to outweigh the survival of the force sent against it. In the aftermath, the World Engine’s status is recorded unevenly: some accounts describe it as destroyed or rendered inert, others as merely quiescent, with its site on Borsis left warded and its wider implications a matter of ongoing concern to those Imperial authorities aware of it. The episode is preserved chiefly through the Astral Knights’ own commemorations and fragmentary reports forwarded to the wider Imperium, and it stands as one of the few points at which Borsis, otherwise a minor world, enters the broader chronicle of the Adeptus Astartes and their contemporaries.
