Death Korps of Krieg

The Death Korps of Krieg are Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) regiments raised on the death world of Krieg, prized for siege warfare. As one of the most recognisable formations within the Imperium’s armies, Death Korps regiments are commonly committed to the galaxy’s most gruelling and attritional warzones, including battlefields scarred by radiation, toxins or chemical hazards akin to conditions on their own world.

Krieg was once a prosperous hive world led by a council of Autocrats. Resentful of Administratum oversight, the Autocrats renounced the Emperor’s authority, precipitating civil war. Loyalist forces under Colonel Jurten of the Krieg 83rd Regiment, unable to hold the world by conventional means, answered the rebellion with atomic bombardment, an event remembered as the Purging. The devastation and the centuries of trench warfare that followed, recorded as the Krieg Civil War and Reconquest, reduced the planet to an irradiated wasteland whose surviving population retreated underground; loyalist forces did not fully retake the surface for some five hundred years.

In atonement for their world’s treachery, and with little else to offer the Imperial Tithe, Krieg’s population has since been dedicated almost wholly to producing soldiers for the Astra Militarum. Korpsmen undergo harsh mental conditioning from childhood, instilling absolute faith in the Emperor and a culture of self-sacrifice in which individual survival is subordinated to the collective war effort; Guardsmen are commonly identified by numerical designation rather than name. Nearly all Krieg infantry wear heavy rebreather masks, a legacy of their world’s toxic atmosphere, rarely removed even away from combat. Officers rise through survival and seniority rather than privilege, and typically fight alongside their men at the front.

Death Korps doctrine centres on sustained artillery bombardment followed by massed infantry assault, with grenadier squads, combat engineers and heavy weapons detachments advancing behind disciplined volley fire to grind down enemy positions through persistence rather than manoeuvre. Supporting formations include the mounted Death Riders of Krieg and dedicated Death Korps Engineers, alongside armoured elements such as Leman Russ squadrons. The regiments’ disregard for their own casualties unsettles many non-Krieg units, a friction that commissars attached to Krieg formations work to ease rather than enforce.

Krieg regiments have been committed to many of the Imperium’s largest and most costly conflicts, among them the Siege of Vraks, the Taros Campaign, the Third and Fourth Wars for Armageddon, the Octarius War and the defence of the Nachmund system during the Nachmund Rift War. No single Death Korps regiment or commander holds authority over the others; each is raised, numbered and dispatched independently by the Departmento Munitorium, and Krieg formations continue to be committed to warzones across the Imperium into the present era.
