Elysian Drop Troops

The Elysian Drop Troops are Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) airborne assault regiments raised on the civilised world of Elysia. Elysia lies in the Segmentum Solar, some thirty light years from the hive world of Armageddon, at the edge of a spur of human-settled space. Rather than fielding the conventional mix of infantry, armour and artillery found in most Imperial Guard formations, worlds tithed to Elysia overwhelmingly produce drop troop regiments, prized by Imperial commanders for their speed and their ability to strike anywhere on a battlefield with little warning. Because permanent heavy vehicles such as the Leman Russ battle tank or the Chimera troop carrier cannot readily accompany airborne assaults, Elysian regiments instead rely on lightweight, air-mobile assets such as drop-capable Sentinel walkers and Tauros vehicles.

The character of Elysian warfare is shaped by conditions at home. The Elysia system sits astride a major Imperial trade route and is surrounded by asteroid fields and dense gas clouds that give cover to pirate raiders, so the planetary defence force must combine home defence with the suppression of piracy in nearby space. This constant low-level conflict leaves Elysians well practised in ship-to-ship boarding actions and in coordinating rapid strikes with orbital and aerial support, habits later carried into their service across the wider Imperium. Recruitment is by volunteer: aspirants must first complete a tour of duty in the Elysian planetary defence force before being accepted into a drop regiment, after which they undergo prolonged training in grav-chute and high-altitude aircraft insertion, marksmanship and survival in hostile environments, since resupply during deployment may be delayed for solar days or weeks. Conscription has been recorded only in exceptional circumstances, including a Chaos Space Marine invasion of Elysia itself and an assault on Veyland Sinestre.

In battle, Elysian regiments deploy from Valkyrie assault carriers and by grav-chute, sometimes dropping in full regimental strength to overwhelm a position before the enemy can organise a response. Their doctrine favours ambush, long-range reconnaissance and hit-and-run raiding over protracted, static engagements, for which their light equipment and limited heavy-weapon support leave them poorly suited. Elysian contingents have been recorded serving in the Calixis Sector’s Spinward Front, held in reserve by Lord Marshal Ghanzorik and committed selectively to actions against Drukhari raiders on Kalf, guerrilla fighting on Horizon and the sabotage of Ork-held shipyards above Sickle; a costly assault on Thrax cost the Elysian contingent nine regiments, with survivors left stranded amid contested Ork and secessionist forces. Other Elysian regiments were drawn into the wider Margin Crusade in the same period, reflecting the broader Imperial demand for their specialised skills.

Elysian troopers are recognisable by the PT-38 jump suit, a reinforced coverall with impact-absorbing padding and a removable thermal liner, worn with lightweight synth-plast flak armour and the type 5 pressure helmet, whose ear protectors and integrated air lines guard against the physical strain of high-altitude descent. No single Elysian regiment is recorded as pre-eminent among the others; the formations are instead valued collectively as a limited and much sought-after strategic asset, deployed by Imperial commanders where a rapid, unorthodox strike is judged worth the risk of denying the regiment sustained support once committed to the ground.
