House Terryn

House Terryn is an Imperial Knight House (a feudal Imperial Knight household bound in fealty to the Imperium of Man) whose Scions fight from the knight world of Voltoris. Loyalist in allegiance throughout its recorded history, the house is traditionally held to be among the oldest Knight Houses, founded by Maximillian Terryn; the precise date of its founding charter is not firmly established, though later record places its origin before the Age of Strife closed the galaxy to expansion. Its motto, “Glory in Honour”, is upheld by successive High Kings, the house currently being led by Patriarch Tybalt.

Voltoris is a knight world whose oceans, once blue, now show green owing to the reaction of native algae to the planet’s twin suns; the house’s seat lies at Furion Peak, where the Knights of Terryn observe the Thousand Canticles of War Long Awaited, a daily rite lasting nearly three hours. Alongside its own household duties, House Terryn is counted among the Knight Houses and Freeblades allied within the Padah March. Voltoris’s tranquillity is often said to explain the eagerness of the house’s Scions to campaign far from home, though this is treated as tradition rather than settled fact.

During the Age of Strife, Voltoris and its Knights passed three millennia without war, a peace the coming of the Imperium did little to disturb until House Terryn pledged its Scions to the Great Crusade in exchange for the continued protection of its home world. By the outset of the Horus Heresy the house fielded some three hundred Knight suits, growth attributed to its close ties with the Legio Astorum and Princeps Lucius. When the Heresy broke out, House Terryn held to its loyalty to the Emperor, fighting alongside Legio Astorum at the Battle of Beta-Garmon while, on Voltoris itself, some three dozen Knights defended the world against forces loyal to the Warmaster Horus. In the Heresy’s aftermath, Voltoris was for a time cut off from the wider Imperium, its formal reunification not accomplished until 239.M35.

In the forty-first millennium, Voltoris’s position near the Eastern Fringe brought House Terryn repeatedly into conflict with the T’au Empire, including an invasion of Voltoris itself and the Prefectia Campaign, while the advance of Hive Fleet Leviathan added a further threat to the sector.

In the present era, Voltoris has endured a Necron awakening and an attempted invasion by the Aeldari of Craftworld Alaitoc, pressing the house to defend ever closer to home even as it continues to commit forces across the galaxy, including to the Indomitus Crusade, the War of Beasts on Vigilus, the defence of the Charadon Sector, and the Fourth Tyrannic War; Knights of the house have also fought as part of the Padah March, as at the Battle of Ordex-Thaag under Baroness Sordhen. The house’s heraldry centres on a white horse’s head upon a blue field, its Knights presented chiefly in blue and red.
