Legio Cybernetica

The Legio Cybernetica is the Adeptus Mechanicus branch that builds and fields battle-automata, autonomous combat robots, for Imperial warfare. It is distinct from the Legio Titanicus, which fields Titans, and from the Skitarii, the Mechanicus’s own soldiery, and its cohorts rank among the oldest formations to emerge from Mars, predating the Imperium’s founding. As with the rest of the Mechanicum, the Legio’s allegiance rests with the Imperium of Man, though it answers to its own Martian doctrinal law rather than to any single Chapter or crusading army.

The Legio traces its origins to Mars during the Age of Strife, when technosavants of the nascent Mechanicum experimented with artificial life and granted their creations independent thought, an act later blamed for grave consequences visited upon early Mankind. In response, the Mechanicum bound itself to the Crimson Accord of Mars, doctrinal law that outlawed the creation of true artificial intelligence, termed the Silica Animus, on pain of death, while permitting ‘lesser and righteous works’ of synthetic life, among them the Battle-Automata entrusted to the newly founded Legio Cybernetica. For much of the early thirtieth millennium the Legio remained a nomadic order, moving between the Forge Worlds of the Mechanicum and trading its automata cohorts for resources; its arrival is recorded as having been widely regarded as an omen of coming conflict. Following the Treaty of Mars, also recorded as the Treaty of Olympus Mons, which bound the Mechanicum to the Emperor, the Legio was absorbed into Imperial service and deliberately fragmented into numerous independent Cohorts, each led by an Archmagos and subdivided into Maniples under a Cybernetica Datasmith, so that no single commander could wield its full destructive potential.

During the Great Crusade the Legio’s Cohorts served alongside Imperial armies and Space Marine Legions across many campaigns; the Magos Gergerra Rei is recorded as having led two Cohorts of combat mechanoids fighting beside the Warmaster Horus and his Luna Wolves. When Horus turned to the Ruinous Powers, elements of the Legio on Mars followed him into revolt during the Schism of Mars, some hoping to cast off the Crimson Accord and pursue the forbidden development of true artificial minds; loyalist forces assaulted the traitor bases on Mars once the Horus Heresy broke out at Isstvan V. Robotic cohorts of both loyalties met directly in battle during the war, among them the defence of Myrdinn City on Entessian, where accounts describe a small traitor force holding off Imperial Titans and Dreadnoughts for close to an hour. With the Heresy’s end, the surviving traitor Cohorts withdrew into the Eye of Terror, where their descendants are held to persist as part of the Dark Mechanicum, their animalistic Battle-Automata patterns spoken of within the Mechanicum only in guarded terms.

The loyalist Legio Cybernetica rededicated itself to the Imperium with oaths of fealty exceeding even those sworn by the Adeptus Astartes, and its Battle-Automata were thereafter governed by sanctified doctrina wafers inserted into each machine before battle, replacing the more independent control methods of the pre-Heresy era so as to guard against any repetition of the Schism. Though it is deployed far less often than during the Great Crusade, the Legio remains a recognised arm of the Mechanicum, its Cohorts still called upon by Forge Worlds and Imperial commanders when war requires the weight of tireless, obedient machines.
