Legio Ignatum

Legio Ignatum, the Fire Wasps, is a Loyalist Titan Legion of the Mars-based Collegia Titanica, serving the Imperium of Man. Its princeps and their god-engines have stood among the most honoured formations of the Titan orders since before the Great Crusade, and the Legion’s ironclad loyalty to those it is charged to protect has defined its reputation and, at times, cost it heavily.

The Legio traces its founding to the Age of Strife, when it emerged on Mars as one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the three original Titan Legions raised alongside the Legio Mortis and the Legio Tempestus. Where Mortis and Tempestus were shaped for destruction and conquest, Ignatum took up the defence of Mars’s forge-fanes against the predators and mutants that overran the planet during that anarchic age, a forbearance its rival Mortis repeatedly mistook for weakness. From this stubbornness came the Legion’s byname, after the Terran insect whose nest, once disturbed, answers with a frenzy out of proportion to the intrusion. Its motto, Inveniam viam aut faciam (‘I will either find a way or I shall make one’), and its colours of red, black and yellow are recorded as its identifying marks.

During the Great Crusade the Legion fought chiefly in defence of worlds reclaimed by the Mechanicum; its best-remembered action was the four-day defence of Ultrecht Magni during the Ullanor campaign, where its Titans were destroyed covering an evacuation rather than withdraw. At the opening of the Horus Heresy, Legio Ignatum numbered some two hundred engines when the traitorous Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal turned the Schism of Mars against it; it repelled an assault by the Legio Pyria only to be ambushed while withdrawing by the Legio Mortis with elements of the Legio Damnosus and Legio Tenarii, a betrayal that scattered it into detachments fighting on Mars, at Paramar V, in the Cataclysm of Iron, in the War Within the Webway and at Tallarn. Remnants fought at the siege of Travo’anor alongside the Legio Crucius and Legio Destructor and beside House Taranis at Inwit, before the survivors deployed in full strength to the Mercury-Exultant killzone of the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra, where Princeps Maximus Cydon led the Legion aboard the Warmonger-class Imperious Prima against the Legio Mortis and its Dies Irae until his death and the engine’s destruction; the shattered Legion fell back to the Eternity Gate under Sanguinius before being overwhelmed.

In the centuries that followed, two Warhound Titans of the Legion remained posted at the Eternity Gate, engaging an Eldar infiltration during the War of the Beast, while other detachments fought on Tanakreg, where the Imperator-class Exemplis was destroyed battling the Word Bearers, and at Hydra Cordatus, where Ignatum’s Titans destroyed the Iron Warriors’ Dies Irae after heavy losses of their own. The Legion later sent Warhounds to the Taros Campaign, deployed in full for the Third War for Armageddon, where Princeps Milar Boitanus and the Imperious Prima were lost covering a retreat from the Ork warlord Gazgrim, fought alongside the Jouran Dragoons and Cadian armour under Ursarkar Creed during the Thirteenth Black Crusade, and sent a single Warhound to the Fourth War for Armageddon. Its enmity for its former kin turned traitor, the Legio Mortis, is recorded as undimmed.
