Legio Metalica

Legio Metalica, known as the Iron Skulls, is a Titan Legion of the Collegia Titanica, the Adeptus Mechanicus arm that fields such god-engines. Its loyalist branch remains bound to the Imperium, and the Legio ranks among the Collegia’s most ancient formations, its service reaching back to the Age of Strife, before the Imperium’s founding. During the Horus Heresy part of the Legion turned to the Ruinous Powers, so Legio Metalica exists in both a loyalist and a traitor tradition, the latter no longer answering to Mars.

The Legion’s forge world of Metalica lies in a perilous region of the galaxy troubled by persistent Ork incursions; the Iron Skulls are recorded as having repelled thirty-two xenos invasions of their world before the Imperium’s arrival. Contact came through the 1159th Expeditionary Fleet, whose initial clash with Metalica’s defences gave way to peace once Mechanicum envoys recognised the world’s technology as drawing on genuine Standard Template Construct patterns, and Metalica swore itself to Mars. The Legio favoured heavier engines such as the Warlord Titan and embedded a diplomatic contingent within allied commands to refine its own doctrine, and formed a lasting concord with the Knight World of Kolossi and its household, House Raven.

During the Great Crusade the Legio took part in the compliance of the Saraninent Conglomerate, fought alongside Roboute Guilliman on Jardingris, and razed the Archaist Strongholds. When the Horus Heresy broke the Imperium, a schism within Legio Metalica produced a traitor branch, corrupted with the aid of the traitor Legio Vulturum at the Battle of Cruciatus Primus and given over to the god Khorne. The loyalist Iron Skulls fought three traitor Titan Legions at the Ruin of Maerdan, clashed with the Legio Pallidus Mors after false accusations of treachery, and defended Kado against the Dark Mechanicum.

In later ages a demi-Legio of Metalica served on Armageddon under Princeps Prime Kurtiz Mannheim, based at Hive Infernus, during the Second War for Armageddon, where Mannheim’s Titan Steel Hammer destroyed three gargants before he drove the crippled engine into the Ork horde and overloaded its reactor. The Legio returned for the Third War for Armageddon, contesting the Hemlock River alongside the Legio Ignatum, the Legio Invigilata, and the Salamanders Chapter, and defending Hive Tartarus against a gargant mob led by Morfang. During the Charadon Campaign the Iron Skulls defended their own forge world against Chaos forces including the Dark Mechanicum’s Legio Morbidus.

Legio Metalica endures into the present era as a Collegia Titanica formation still bound to the Imperium, its traitor offshoot remembered separately as a renegade force given fully to Khorne’s service. The map anchor for the Legio remains its forge world of Metalica, site of both its ancient defence against xenos and its later campaigns against Chaos incursion.
