Mordian Iron Guard

The Mordian Iron Guard are Astra Militarum regiments from the hive world of Mordian, famed for iron discipline and drilled volley fire. Within the Imperial Guard they serve chiefly as line infantry and artillery, and are prized by Imperial commanders for their reliability under fire and their refusal to abandon a position once ordered to hold it.

Mordian is a hive world whose rotation and orbit are matched, so that one face of the planet lies in permanent glare while the other endures unending night; its people live crowded into towering hive-cities on the dark side alone. Government is exercised by an oligarchic body known as the Tetrarchy, whose strict rationing of the world’s scarce resources breeds constant unrest, riots and insurrection among the overcrowded populace. Regiments raised for Imperial service are drawn from a home guard already practised in suppressing such disorder, and their training emphasises endless repetition of drill, marksmanship and bayonet work, instilling an obedience to the chain of command that borders on the absolute. In the field this discipline expresses itself as tightly ordered ranks delivering timed lasgun volleys behind massed bayonets, supported by dedicated heavy weapons platoons and artillery; Mordian regiments are noted for holding their ground even against daemonic hosts rather than yielding a line.

Mordian regiments have been recorded across a wide span of Imperial history, including the Macharian Crusade, the Sabbat Worlds Crusade and the Achilus Crusade, as well as the thirteenth Black Crusade and the Battle of Gathalamor. During the Third War for Armageddon, six Mordian regiments under General Darcus Heiss helped defend Hive Death Mire, and Mordian troops are also recorded in the War of Beasts on Vigilus and War Zone Chalnath. Notable named vehicles associated with these campaigns include the Shadowsword Alpha Three and the Baneblade Mordian Honour, the latter destroyed during the Armageddon fighting.

During the Indomitus Crusade the 84th Mordian Iron Guard, commanded by General Luthor Dvorgin, produced one of the regiment’s most singular figures: Sergeant Magda Kesh, promoted to captain after her conduct on Barren and later declared a Living Saint by Inquisitor Leonid Rostov following an assault on a Blackstone Fortress during which she is recorded as manifesting wings and holy light. With the opening of the Great Rift and the onset of the era later called the Dark Imperium, Mordian itself has come under repeated assault from the Thousand Sons and their cultist agents; the Iron Guard have so far broken every heretic cell uncovered on their own soil, even as other worlds of their sector have fared less well. In the field, Mordian regiments remain distinctive for going to war in the same brightly coloured, elaborately trimmed uniforms worn on the parade ground, each regiment sworn at its founding never to let its banner fall or be taken.
