Officio Assassinorum

The Officio Assassinorum is the Imperial office that trains and despatches masked killers, answerable to the High Lords of Terra.

The Officio sits within the Adeptus Administratum, though it was once reckoned part of the Imperial Household and, in its earliest days, answered to the Ephoroi of the Adeptus Custodes. Its head, the Grand Master of Assassins, holds a seat on the Senatorum Imperialis by tradition, yet may despatch a single operative only with the sanction of a two-thirds majority of the High Lords, a safeguard against the misuse of so lethal an instrument. The organisation is headquartered in a temple on Terra whose location is withheld even from the wider Adeptus Terra, and its existence is known with certainty only to the Inquisition, senior Administratum officials, and a handful of veteran commanders; to most Imperial citizens and Guardsmen, the Assassins are no more than a dark rumour.

Recruits, drawn from the orphans of the Schola Progenium and from feral worlds, are trained for a decade before being assigned to one of several temples, or clades, each cultivating a distinct method of killing: the Callidus Temple in infiltration and impersonation, the Vindicare Temple in marksmanship, the Eversor Temple in drug‑driven close‑quarters slaughter, and the Culexus Temple in the hunting of psykers, whom its pariah‑touched operatives alone can approach unharmed. The Vanus and Venenum Temples, specialists in intelligence and poison respectively, are more obscure, and a seventh order, the Maerorus Temple, was destroyed after its illegal experiments with human, mutant, and xenos hybrids. Temples coordinate through sub‑temples at Segmentum and sector level, all reporting to the central Temple of Assassins on Terra, and may combine operatives from several clades into a single Execution Force for the hardest targets.

The Officio traces its founding to the Great Crusade, when six Directors Primus, each masked and unknown to the others, swore a pact on Mount Vengeance on the world of Thor before a seventh, hooded figure later revealed as Malcador the Sigilite. During the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy the order was known as the Divisio Assassinorum. In the present era its assassins continue to operate on behalf of the High Lords, moving covertly alongside the Imperial Guard, the Adepta Sororitas, and the Space Marines without joining their ranks, so that the reach of Imperial justice extends wherever treachery, heresy, or secession threatens the Emperor’s rule.
