Vostroyan Firstborn

The Vostroyan Firstborn are Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) regiments raised from Vostroya, formed of each family’s eldest child. Vostroya is an industrial world in the Halo Stars, in the Segmentum Obscurus beyond the Eye of Terror, governed by Techtriarchs who combine the authority of the Adeptus Mechanicus with more conventional planetary rule. During the Horus Heresy, Vostroya refused an Imperial summons to raise troops, judging that its manufactoria were of greater use continuing to arm the Emperor’s forces than surrendering workers to the Imperial Army. When the Heresy ended, the Administratum’s reckoning of the war’s cost exposed this refusal, and Roboute Guilliman, acting as Imperial Regent, oversaw the settlement by which Vostroya agreed to atone: the firstborn child of every family, noble or common, would be given to the Astra Militarum in perpetuity. This debt, recorded as the Offering of the Firstborn, admits no exception and has bound Vostroyan society for ten thousand years.

Unlike regiments raised en masse and then stood down, the Firstborn are continuously replenished with new recruits from their homeworld, so that each regiment traces an unbroken existence back to its original founding in the early 31st millennium. Recruits train amid the frozen, ash-covered ruins of Vostroya’s derelict cityscapes, conditions that shape the regiments’ specialism in urban and winter warfare. The officer corps is drawn from Vostroya’s noble houses, while the common soldiery come from its worker families, and this stratified structure has historically made the regiments classist in outlook, with lowborn Vostroyans rarely advanced to command; accounts note that Colonel Gregorious Sebastev, distinguished on Danik’s World, became the first lowborn officer known to survive his service and return to Vostroya. Firstborn units favour hand-crafted lasguns of local pattern, sometimes called laslocks, alongside plasma guns and heavy bolters, and officers traditionally carry axe-bladed lasguns treated as regimental heirlooms. Their distinctive ursine-skin hats, in shades described as Mountain Snow, Rust Patches, and Tundra Soil, mark them among the more visually archaic Astra Militarum forces, a consequence of Vostroya’s distance from centralised Imperial oversight.

Vostroyan regiments are recorded in numerous theatres, including the Nimbosa Crusade, the Fall of Medusa V, the Spinward Front, the Pandorax Campaign, the Cryptus Campaign, and the Octarius War, alongside the Eighteenth Great War of Vostroya fought on their own soil. Named commanders associated with these campaigns include Lord Marshal Graf Toschenko at Nimbosa, Lord Marshal Graf Harazahn and Colonel Illyich Szradislav at Medusa V, and Colonel Maxim Kabanov, who led the Vostroyan 68th Regiment on Danik’s World alongside Sebastev.

Since the opening of the Great Rift in the early 42nd millennium severed Vostroya from reliable contact with Terra, the world has continued to raise and dispatch Firstborn regiments into the warp-tortured dark of the Imperium Nihilus, often without clear knowledge of where reinforcement is needed. Many such expeditions are recorded as lost, their passage complicated by the dimming of the Astronomican, yet Vostroya has held to its ancient vow never again to withhold aid when the Imperium calls. In recent generations this obligation has also been extended to a family’s eldest daughter where no son is born, binding both sons and daughters of Vostroya, noble and common alike, into the same brotherhood of debt and service.
