Baal Secundus

Baal Secundus is an irradiated moon of the Baal system, where Sanguinius fell and was taken in by the tribe known as the Blood. Its people call it Baalfora. It is the most heavily populated world of the system, and it stands beside Baal itself, the seat of the Blood Angels Chapter, as one of the two places most closely bound to that Legion’s identity. Its surface is dominated by extensive irradiated deserts, and the drifting Red Mist adds to the difficulty of settled life.

The moon’s place in the Imperium’s history begins with Sanguinius. Accounts record that he came down on Baal Secundus in the wastes, and that the tribe called the Blood received him there. This occurred before the Emperor’s arrival and the Great Crusade, which is the reason the moon is tied to the origin of the Blood Angels. Later tradition ties Baal Secundus to the Legion’s early years, and to the world of its foster-people, more than to any single campaign. The Blood Angels of the Horus Heresy era and their successors are therefore best understood alongside this moon and its neighbours in the Baal system. Baal is the anchor for the Chapter’s fortress-monastery, and the wider system is the map anchor for Baal Secundus.

In the current era, the moon is best known for the Devastation of Baal at the close of the forty-first millennium. Tyranid forces drained much of the remaining life from the moon’s surface, while the Blood Angels and their allies, under Chapter Master Dante, fought to defend the system. The loss reduced Baal Secundus’s capacity to support a population that had been concentrated there despite the Red Mist and the deserts.

After the devastation, Roboute Guilliman diverted ships to the rebuilding of Baal Secundus. The moon’s standing rests on two things: its association with Sanguinius, and its role as the principal home of the system’s people. Both of these link it to the Blood Angels timeline, from the Legion’s founding under its Primarch to the Chapter’s survival in the Imperium Nihilus era.
