Charadon

Charadon is an Ork-held world in the Ultima Segmentum and the seat of the galaxy’s largest and most enduring Ork empire. It lies some weeks’ travel through the warp from Rynn’s World, in the same broad region of space as Ultramar, though it is not a colony or possession of that realm. Rather than a single dynasty, Charadon is held by whichever Ork warlord currently carries the title of Arch-Arsonist, a rulership that passes to each successive claimant strong enough to seize and hold it, giving the empire a continuity of place even as its leadership changes hands through conquest.

The world’s best-attested ruler is Snagrod, Arch-Arsonist of Charadon, who assembled and launched his Waaagh! from the world in 444.M41, driving it towards Armageddon and precipitating the Second War for Armageddon. That campaign, fought alongside the greenskin hosts of Ghazghkull Thraka, drew the Imperium’s Space Marines and Astra Militarum into one of the Ultima Segmentum’s defining conflicts of the late 41st millennium, and it stands as Charadon’s clearest anchor in the wider timeline of Imperial history.

As a source of large, sustained Waaaghs! rather than a single decisive battle, Charadon is best understood as a standing threat on the edge of Ultramar’s reach: a rival power sharing the region with the Ultramarines’ realm and with garrison worlds such as Rynn’s World, held by the Crimson Fists, without ever having been subdued by either. Its status changes only with the fortunes of whichever Arch-Arsonist currently holds it, and accounts of the world outside the era of Snagrod’s Waaagh! remain comparatively sparse, consistent with an Ork stronghold whose history is recorded chiefly through the campaigns it launches against the Imperium rather than through internal chronicle.
