War Zone Charadon
War Zone Charadon designates the M42 war for the Charadon Sector, where Death Guard invaders struck the Adeptus Mechanicus system of Metalica. Imperial Fists and Mechanicus defenders answered the incursion, in a conflict that came to be reckoned part of the wider Charadon Campaign. The war followed the opening of the Great Rift, when the plague-ridden legions of the Death Guard pressed into the Ultima Segmentum in search of forge worlds to corrupt and strip of their industry. Metalica, a heavily fortified Mechanicus system prized for its output of war matériel, drew the attention of Nurgle’s host as a target whose fall would cripple Imperial supply lines across the Charadon Sector and starve neighbouring campaigns of arms. The Death Guard opened the war with a plague-laden assault that overran outer holdings and infected voidships, forge-shrines and skitarii garrisons alike with the slow corruption of the Plague God. Adeptus Mechanicus forces fought a grinding defence of Metalica’s manufactoria and sacred forges while the Imperial Fists, summoned to the sector, mounted a counter-offensive to break the siege and burn out the contagion, turning the conflict into a prolonged contest between rust and fire. The struggle is remembered in later accounts as the War of Slime and Metal, a name reflecting its character as an industrial and biological contest for Metalica rather than a single decisive battle. Charadon’s fighting proceeded alongside forces committed to the Arks of Omen crusade elsewhere in the Imperium, and control of Metalica remained contested rather than resolved as the sector’s fate stayed bound to the Imperium’s broader response to the Great Rift.
