Eternity Gate

The Eternity Gate is one of the principal gates of the Imperial Palace on Terra, guarding approaches to the Emperor’s Sanctum. It ranks among the Palace’s fortified precincts, raised during the great works of Imperial unification and reinforced across millennia as part of the Palace’s outer defensive architecture. Positioned close to the Sanctum itself, the gate occupies a place of particular significance in the Palace’s layout, standing as one of the last barriers between the wider fortress-continent and the Emperor’s own seat.

The gate’s renown rests chiefly on its role during the Siege of Terra in the closing days of the Horus Heresy, when the forces of the Warmaster Horus fought to breach the Imperial Palace and reach the Emperor. Accounts of the siege’s final phase describe the Eternity Gate as a focal point of the fighting, defended by loyalist forces including the Imperial Fists under Rogal Dorn and the Blood Angels under Sanguinius, against Traitor assaults pressed with particular ferocity as the war approached its climax. It was from this stretch of the Palace defences that Sanguinius is recorded as having departed to intercept Horus’s flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, leading to his death in single combat with the Warmaster and, in turn, to the Emperor’s own final confrontation with his fallen son.

In the millennia since, the Eternity Gate has endured as one of the most solemnly regarded sites within the Imperial Palace, its fabric bearing the scars of the siege alongside later restoration. It is counted among the Palace’s monuments to the Heresy’s end, standing in proximity to other storied precincts of the fortress-continent and forming part of the wider Sol System’s dense concentration of sites tied to the Emperor, Terra, and the Siege. Its later use and present custodianship are not fully documented, though it remains bound in tradition to the memory of the war fought at its threshold.
