Battle at the Eternity Gate
The Battle at the Eternity Gate was fought upon Terra during the Horus Heresy, in which Sanguinius defended the Imperial Palace against Horus. The Eternity Gate formed part of the palace’s void shield generatorium, whose continued operation was essential to the defence of the Imperial Palace against the besieging forces of the Traitor primarch Horus Lupercal. Sanguinius, primarch of the Blood Angels Legion, took personal command of the gate’s defence, rallying the loyalist forces gathered there during the later stages of the Siege of Terra. As the shields faltered under sustained assault, Sanguinius left the gate in the charge of his remaining Blood Angels and flew to intercept Horus aboard the Traitor’s flagship, resolving to confront him directly rather than allow the position to fall. There, already weakened by the battle, he fought Horus in single combat and was struck down, his death occurring only moments before the Emperor himself reached the same vessel. The loss of Sanguinius at the Eternity Gate ranked among the gravest suffered by the Imperium during the Heresy, yet it directly preceded the final confrontation between the Emperor and Horus that ended the rebellion. Within Imperial tradition the defence of the gate is remembered as an act of singular sacrifice, and it holds a lasting place in the history of the Blood Angels Legion.
