Stalinvast

Stalinvast is a hive world in the Segmentum Tempestus, the setting of Ian Watson’s novel Inquisitor, and was later written off by the Imperium. It belongs to the early Black Library period of Warhammer 40,000 fiction. It is distinct from Necromunda, from any other factory world with a Stalin-derived name, and from the later Ciaphas Cain stories.

The novel places Inquisitor Jaq Draco on Stalinvast, where a Hydra cult and genestealers were active and Inquisitorial operations took place. Later sources describe the planet’s end in terms comparable to Exterminatus, the Imperial sanction of destroying a world’s population. Stalinvast thereafter survives chiefly as a lost world with a hive-world past, rather than as a functioning member of the Imperium.

Stalinvast remains among the oldest named hive worlds whose destruction is recorded in Warhammer 40,000 fiction. Unofficial fan summaries keep its position in the Segmentum Tempestus. They do not relocate it to the Segmentum Obscurus, and they do not list it as a surviving tithe world.
