Jaq Draco

Inquisitor

Also known as Inquisitor Draco

Jaq Draco was an Ordo Malleus inquisitor of the Inquisition’s old Inner Order who stole the Book of the Rhana Dandra and was declared renegade. The Inner Order functioned as an oversight body within the Inquisition, its members answerable for the conduct of other inquisitors rather than for any single world or heresy, and Draco held that watching brief through the events that came to define his career. His standing rested on discretion and on the trust extended by the wider Inquisition, both of which he ultimately forfeited in pursuit of what he judged a graver necessity.

Draco’s recorded career turns on his posting to Stalinvast, where the Inquisition sent him to oversee a purge conducted by the inquisitor Harq Obispal. The investigation there uncovered a genestealer infestation entangled with a covert faction, the Ordo Hydra, and a conspiracy aimed at turning the untrained potential of the human mind into a weapon against the Ruinous Powers. Draco pursued the matter with a retinue of unusual specialists: the assassin Meh’Lindi, the mechanically augmented Grimm, and the servitor-intelligence Googol. Their combined skills carried the investigation beyond what any single inquisitor, however senior, could have accomplished alone, and the affair exposed how deeply factional rivalry had already taken root within the Inquisition’s own ranks.

The Stalinvast affair led Draco to Terra and into the Sanctum Imperialis, and from there to the hidden Eldar repository of forbidden lore that lies beyond the reach of the Imperium’s authority. He entered without invitation from its Eldar custodians and removed the Book of the Rhana Dandra, a volume held to record Eldar prophecy concerning the end of days. The act was unprecedented for an Imperial servant and irrecoverable in its consequences: possession of the book placed Draco in defiance of both his own order and the Eldar who guarded it, and no plea of necessity could restore the trust he had broken.

For this the Inquisition declared Jaq Draco renegade, ending his standing within the Inner Order and setting agents of his former colleagues against him. Accounts place his death within the webway, the labyrinthine Eldar network through which he had gained access to the repository, though the precise circumstances are recorded unevenly. His own testimony survives as the Liber Secretorum, the account through which his portrait of the forty-first millennium as a more perilous and unstable age than official record admitted is chiefly known. Read against the careers of Harq Obispal and the shadow of the Ordo Hydra, Draco’s fall illustrates how the Inquisition’s internal watchers could themselves become its most consequential casualties.
