Iron Hands

The Iron Hands are a Space Marine Chapter descended from the X Legion and its primarch, Ferrus Manus, one of the Imperium’s original First Founding chapters. Raised in the thirtieth millennium during the Great Crusade, the Legion was renowned for high-intensity, combined-arms warfare and for a close working relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus, whose regard for logic over sentiment the Iron Hands came to share. The Chapter is bound to the harsh world of Medusa, and rather than a single fortress-monastery its companies operate from a number of mobile armoured strongholds, reflecting an organisation built around dispersed, self-sufficient Iron Council clans rather than a centralised command.

The defining event in Iron Hands history is the Horus Heresy, the galaxy-wide civil war of the early thirty-first millennium. When the Emperor’s Children under Fulgrim turned against them, the Iron Hands were drawn into the Great Crusade’s climactic betrayal at Isstvan V, fighting alongside the Raven Guard and Salamanders in what became known as the Dropsite Massacre. Ferrus Manus was killed in that battle, and the destruction of much of the Legion’s strength there shattered its unity, scattering survivors into smaller warbands that continued the war against the traitors independently before elements eventually reconstituted around a Medusan Council.

The loss of their primarch shaped the Chapter’s subsequent doctrine and temperament. The Iron Hands hold that flesh is inherently weak and fallible, and answer this conviction through extensive bionic replacement of organic tissue, a practice extended to newly inducted battle-brothers as a mark of the Chapter’s values. This distrust of weakness, whether physical or emotional, produced a reputation for coldly logical, unsentimental leadership in battle, tempered by an enduring reverence for Ferrus Manus and a refusal among many of his sons to accept his death as final.

As one of the Loyalist Legions divided under the Codex Astartes after the Heresy, the Iron Hands stand among the progenitors of several successor chapters that carry forward aspects of their doctrine and gene-seed. Leadership rests not with a single Chapter Master but with the Iron Council, a body of senior commanders such as Iron Father Feirros and Kardan Stronos, who serve in turn as its elected war leader and representative. Into the present era the Chapter remains active within the Imperium’s wars, its companies valued for armoured assault and attrition warfare informed by the same principles forged in the aftermath of Isstvan V and carried through the Great Crusade that first proved them.
