Zahndrekh
Nemesor, Overlord of Gidrim
Also known as Nemesor Zahndrekh
Homeworld: Gidrim
Nemesor Zahndrekh is the Overlord of Gidrim in the Sautekh Dynasty, a Necron general who believes the Wars of Secession are still being fought. He regards Orks, Aeldari, and humans as rebellious Necrontyr, the name for his people before their transformation into Necrons, and conducts his campaigns as acts of pacification rather than extermination, intending to capture rebels with honour rather than destroy them. Where other Necron commanders favour annihilation, Zahndrekh issues terms, accepts surrender, and treats defeated foes as errant subjects to be returned to the fold.
His court regards this conduct as malfunction, a flaw in the cryptek engineering that preserves a Necron noble’s mind, yet no rival has succeeded in having him replaced. The reason is Obyron, formerly his equal in rank and now his aide-de-camp, who is recorded as having sworn an oath of loyalty predating Zahndrekh’s decline and who intercepts every attempt at deposition. Zahndrekh forbids the use of Deathmarks against his enemies, holds feasts at which captured officers are seated as honoured guests rather than prisoners, and on one occasion released the White Scars’ Kor’sarro Khan unharmed after their duel, judging the contest to have been fought with sufficient honour to spare his opponent. Such episodes place Zahndrekh among the more unusual figures to have engaged Imperial commanders directly, rather than through the impersonal killing that characterises most Necron incursions.
Zahndrekh’s Sautekh Dynasty is led in overall command by Imotekh the Stormlord, Phaeron of Sautekh, under whose reawakening the dynasty’s tomb worlds have returned to war across the galaxy; Gidrim’s continued expansion is one thread within that broader resurgence rather than an isolated campaign. Trazyn the Infinite, the Archon of Solemnace and a contemporary of the wider Necron nobility, exemplifies the alternative that Zahndrekh’s court might have expected of a functioning Overlord: cold acquisitiveness rather than Zahndrekh’s courtly delusion. Against this backdrop, Zahndrekh’s insistence that the Wars of Secession endure some sixty million years after their end marks him as an anomaly even among the Necrons’ many afflicted nobles.
Some observers suspect that Zahndrekh feigns his confusion on occasion, using the pretence of an ancient war to disguise present strategy, though his conduct offers no reliable means of distinguishing performance from genuine malfunction. What is not in dispute is Gidrim’s record under his command: a commander who insists he still fights battles ended in antiquity continues, in the present era, to win the ones actually before him.
