Armour of Contempt campaign

The Armour of Contempt campaign was the Imperial operation that liberated Gereon from Archenemy occupation during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. It closed a protracted struggle for the world, which had spent years under Archenemy rule after falling to the forces of Chaos, and it stands as one of the named military beats by which the Crusade’s later prosecution is reckoned. The operation followed the covert insertion of a Tanith First-and-Only cell under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, sent into Gereon to make contact with the surviving planetary resistance. That mission culminated in the extraction of the resistance leadership together with the Blood Pact defector Mabbon Etogaur, whose intelligence on the Occupation’s dispositions was judged by Crusade high command to be sufficient to justify a full invasion rather than continued clandestine action. Warmaster Macaroth committed a substantial Astra Militarum expeditionary force to the resulting offensive, with the Tanith First-and-Only again serving among the spearhead regiments alongside massed Imperial Guard formations. The invading troops fought entrenched Occupation garrisons and Blood Pact units defending a world whose atmosphere and terrain had been deliberately corrupted over years of Archenemy rule, so that combat proceeded amid toxic environmental conditions imposed by the occupiers themselves. Where the earlier Gereon operations had been fought as underground resistance and infiltration, the Armour of Contempt campaign marked the shift to open, large-scale conventional war, and its conclusion restored the world to Imperial control. It is remembered within the wider chronology of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade as the point at which years of hidden struggle on Gereon were resolved by direct force of arms, binding the world’s fate to the Crusade’s broader campaign against the Archenemy.
