Battle of Amarah

The Battle of Amarah was fought in 992.M41 in the Amarah system of the Orpheus Sector, in Segmentum Tempestus, during the Orphean War. Its principal ground fighting fell on the hive world Amarah Prime, capital of the sector, after Necron forces of the Maynarkh Dynasty struck the system. Governor Calibron Laan had concentrated Imperial strength about Amarah. On 3970992.M41 a gravitational assault on the system’s star preceded a Necron Black Fleet that shattered orbital defences and landed armies across the hives. New Vassburg and other centres were devastated; Death Korps of Krieg under Marshal Karis Venner fought to the last on the Karalsa plains. In orbit the Imperial Navy could not prevail against two Necron Tomb Ships. Chapter Master Asterion Moloc then committed the Minotaurs’ fleet—three Battle Barges and eight Strike Cruisers—and led boarding assaults on the Tomb Ships. After Terminators under Sergeant Ixthalion fought into the control vault of the vessel later named Dead Hand, Moloc teleported aboard with Terminator veterans and Contemptor Dreadnoughts. He duelled the ship’s Necron Overlord, believed to be Maktlan Kutlakh of the Maynarkh, and drove the Black Spear into the Overlord’s back even as the hull failed and both were vented into the void. The dying battle barge Fidelitas Lambda rammed the Tomb Ship, forcing the Necron fleet to withdraw; the attackers on the surface vanished with them. Amarah Prime was left ruined. Moloc was reported killed, then recovered alive by his fleet—at least the seventh such incident recorded for the name over five centuries.
