Battle of Deep Orbital DS191

The Battle of Deep Orbital DS191 was a campaign of the Great Crusade, the Imperium’s long effort to reunite humanity’s scattered worlds, fought shortly before the Horus Heresy. By this time, much of the Emperor’s Children Legion, including its primarch Fulgrim, had already set upon a path towards corruption. The Emperor’s Children and the Iron Hands fought together to clear Ork forces from the space station Deep Orbital DS-191, in the Callinedes System. Hundreds of Space Marines took part in the fighting, including Lucius and Saul Tarvitz, whose companies moved to relieve the company of Solomon Demeter. As a rift widened within the Emperor’s Children between those drawing close to Fulgrim and those who remained loyal to the Emperor, officers favoured by the primarch, among them Eidolon, Marius Vairosean and Julius Kaesoron, left Demeter unsupported. The battle was also used as an occasion to attempt to win over Ferrus Manus, primarch of the Iron Hands, to the cause of Horus. The Emperor’s Children prevailed in the battle, but Commander Vespasian judged their conduct dishonourable; when he raised the matter with Fulgrim, the primarch killed him. Lucius, Tarvitz and many other Emperor’s Children were thereafter despatched to Isstvan III, rather than joining Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus in the subsequent assault upon Callinedes IV.
