Betrayal at Grief

The Betrayal at Grief is an episode of the Badab War (901–912.M41), a breach of trust among Space Marine Chapters at Grief. The Badab War began when Lugft Huron, Chapter Master of the Astral Claws and self-styled Tyrant of Badab, renounced Imperial authority over the Badab sector and issued his Articles of Just Secession. The secession drew in several allied Chapters, among them the Mantis Warriors and the Executioners, and, under pressure, the Lamenters, whose reduced numbers left them exposed to coercion. Loyalties within the Secessionist camp were therefore uneven from the outset, and several Chapters are recorded as having wavered, defected or been compelled to remain. The Betrayal at Grief belongs to this uncertain period, in which alliances between Chapters were negotiated, broken and reassessed while the Imperial response was still gathering strength. Accounts of the episode are sparse, and the precise sequence of events at Grief, together with the forces engaged, is not firmly established in the material available to this encyclopedia. What is consistent across the tradition of the war is its character: an act of treachery committed between Chapters that were, or had recently been, allied, rather than a battle between clearly divided sides. Such episodes hardened attitudes on both sides of the conflict, made later offers of accommodation harder to trust, and contributed to the war’s prolongation. This entry therefore records the event’s place in the wider conflict and does not attempt to supply detail that the record does not bear out. On the Orrery graph the event is bound to the Badab sector and to the timeline of the Badab War, alongside its principal contemporaries: Huron and the Astral Claws, the coerced Lamenters, and the Loyalist commanders who organised the Imperial campaign, including Lord Commander Verant Ortys and, later, Carab Culln of the Red Scorpions. The war ended with the siege of Badab Primaris, the destruction of the Astral Claws as a Chapter of the Imperium and Huron’s transformation into Huron Blackheart, founder of the Red Corsairs. Readers seeking the wider course and settlement of the conflict should consult the Badab War entry, which this account is intended to supplement.
