Closing of the regia occulta
The Closing of the Regia Occulta was Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn’s sealing of an occult gate on Ignix that had let Ork raiders slaughter the world’s settlers. Still early in his career within the Ordo Xenos, Eisenhorn undertook the closing as part of his duties patrolling the Grand Banks, the smallest fief of Ignix, whose exposed and thinly defended settlements had borne the brunt of the raids the gate permitted. The Regia Occulta itself is recorded as a hidden threshold rather than a fortress or shrine, its significance lying in what it let through rather than in any structure built around it, and its sealing is remembered on Ignix as the act that ended a period of unchecked xenos incursion. Ignix’s geography shaped the stakes of the closing. Foothold, the world’s capital, anchored a population of wet miners who sifted the planet’s temporary waterways for ore, labour conducted amid seasonal electrocorporeal storms known locally as the Cackle. These storms arose from irregularities in Ignix’s orbit combined with the world’s stellar weather, and together with the scattered, water-dependent mining settlements they left the fief poorly placed to resist sustained raiding once the gate had opened a path for Ork war bands. The closing followed the death of Flammel, who had held the Grand Banks patrol before Eisenhorn. Eisenhorn assumed responsibility for the patrol in Flammel’s stead and, in that capacity, moved to shut the gate, ending the immediate threat to the fief’s settlers. The episode is treated as a formative early exercise of Eisenhorn’s authority as an Inquisitor, binding his name to Ignix’s local history well before the wider Helican Subsector came to know him for larger investigations. Ignix remains a world of the Helican Subsector, standing alongside Damask and Glavia among its constituent worlds. The Closing of the Regia Occulta is remembered there less as a single battle than as the resolution of a standing vulnerability, one that had let raiders reach settlers who otherwise had no means of defending the Grand Banks’ open waterways and storm-scoured terrain.
