Second Mannheim Siege
The Second Mannheim Siege was an Imperial attack on Ork forces in the Mannheim Gap on Armageddon during the Third War for Armageddon. The Gap lies near Hive Volcanus on Armageddon Prime. No narrower day-date than the war that began in 998.M41 is recorded beyond the battle’s own duration. Earlier in the war the Celestial Lions had entered the Gap against Ork scrap-titans and been ambushed; of some five hundred Marines who entered, fewer than a fifth escaped. Pride Leader Ekene Dubaku and the survivors meant to return and die there. Reclusiarch Merek Grimaldus of the Black Templars, investigating the Chapter’s attrition after Helsreach, refused last rites meant only for that end. He mustered Astra Militarum forces from Hive Helsreach under General Kurov and joined the Lions in the second assault. The battle lasted just over three hours after dawn. Dubaku fought the Ork warlord; Grimaldus seized the warlord from behind, and Dubaku killed him. Black Templars drop pods then reinforced the field. The Imperials won. Dubaku became Chapter Master of the Celestial Lions. Grimaldus later left Armageddon with High Marshal Helbrecht in the pursuit of Ghazghkull Thraka.
